Board Meeting 4/2/18

Sun-n-Fun Tennis Club
Minutes of Meeting on April 2, 2018
Location:  Magnolia Room, Sun-n-Fun

President Don Harrington called the meeting to order at 3:15 p.m.

Members present: Joan Axtt, Terry Black, Don Harrington, Bonnie DeSiro, Bob Dougherty,
Mark Eshleman, Ann Sowle, Wade Wilkerson.

Absent members: Richard Brown, Scott Foster, Cathy Harrington
The minutes of the March 5, 2018 meeting were read and approved.
Don reported that he and several others have removed the short screens from Court 3and placed in the shed next to Court 6 for future use to place around the backboard which is now located on Court 4. He has asked the SNF office to move the windscreen which is now under the backboard to Court 3. This would require the temporary removal of the backboard. The reason for this is that the screen cannot be removed or rolled up with the backboard in place. SNF has not taken any action.

Joan will leave the money in a safe in the SNF Office.  Debbie Foster is the point of contact.
Old Business:
Don has asked the office to locate memorial bricks for tennis members together. Currently
the Blouin and the Andrews bricks are not with our other departed members.

As stated in the March minutes, SNF has agreed to put a new shed with electricity by Court six for the ball machine. Don will inform the office we need to keep the shed on Court 3 for storage of the gas blower and wind screens.

New Business:

Thursday April 12 at 9:00 a.m. will be a workday to roll up the wind screens on Courts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. Activity will start at Court 1. People are urged to bring ladders.

As an experiment starting next season, Don got the office to buy clips that are stronger than the zip ties we have been using for some of the windscreens.

Don will coordinate with Barrie-Lee Johnson and the Musical Theater Group about the Tennis Club buying a brick in memory of Gordon Strout for the Butterfly Garden/Memorial Walk. There is precedent for one person having more than one memorial brick.

Wade Wilkerson read a proposed policy for use of the ball machine. Joan Axtt moved that it be approved. Terry Black seconded the motion. It passed unanimously. The policy is attached as Exhibit A. Bob Dougherty will add it to the web site.

Wade read the rule we’ve been using on when to play a second deuce as game point in social rotation tennis and moved it be approved. Joan seconded the motion. It passed unanimously. The rule is attached as Exhibit B.

After a discussion of moving the “Thursday Ladder” back to Tuesday, it was agreed that it will remain a Thursday Ladder next season.

Ann Sowle said our club dues cover the period April 1 through March 31. So, dues for the 2018-2019 season may be paid now.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:02 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Wade W. Wilkerson, Secretary
Don Harrington, President

Exhibit A
SNF Tennis Ball Machine Use Policy
Approved by SNF Tennis Board on April 2, 2018

The tennis ball machine, located in the shed near Court 6, is Sun-n-Fun (SNF) property. It is free to use by any SNF guest or owner after said guest or owner has been instructed in the operation of the machine by one of the authorized Ball Machine Instructors. In 2017-2018 said instructors include: Darwin Hormann, Larry Day, Wade Wilkerson, Don Harrington.

Use of the ball machine is limited to one hour if people are waiting to use the ball machine or Court 6.

Use of the ball machine is restricted to times when Court 6 is not reserved for other activities such as lessons or ladders.

The ball machine will only be used on Court 6.

The combination to the SNF Tennis Ball Machine storage shed lock will be provided only to people who have been instructed in the use of the ball machine. Those receiving the combination are not to disclose the combination to others.

The ball machine, remote control clicker, and all tennis balls must be returned to the shed after use. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of ball machine privileges for that person.

Exhibit B
Rotation Rule for When to Play a Second Deuce
Approved by SNF Tennis Board on April 2, 2018

If one or fewer players per Court (on average) are waiting to rotate in, make the second deuce point the game point. If more than one player per Court are waiting to rotate in (on average), make the first deuce point the game point.

Examples:
1) Two Courts are active. Two players are waiting with racquets stacked. Since there is one or fewer players average waiting per Court, the second deuce is game point.

2) Three Courts are active. Four players are waiting. Since there are 1.333 players average waiting per Court, the first deuce is the game point.
