Sun N Fun Tennis Tournaments
Each season there will be 4 tournaments scheduled. Three of these tournaments are doubles and co-ed with players placed in brackets according to their ability as determined by the tournament committee. The three co-ed tournaments will typically be held in the months of December, January and March with the exact dates determined by the tournament committee. Rules for these tournaments are listed below. In addition, there will be one “fun” tournament open to all tennis members usually scheduled in the month of February. Rules and format for this tournament are still in the flexible stage and will be determined prior to the event.
Rules for participation
Except for substitutes as determined by the tournament committee, tournament players must be residents for at least 30 consecutive days at SNF.
Club dues must be paid in full.
Ladder participation is not mandatory but is strongly encouraged as ladder position will be one of the factors used for bracket placement.
Tournament entries should exhibit current tennis involvement at SNF such as ladder participation, social tennis or regular matches at SNF.
Thursday Preliminary Games
Each bracket will consist of 8 players as selected by the tournament committee. In the event the number of players is not divisible by 8, a bracket of 4 may be used. Each player will play with everyone once and against everyone twice. There are four no-ad games and one seven point Coman tiebreaker for each match for a total of 5 games per match. In the tiebreaker you must win by two.
A no-ad game means if the score reaches deuce, the team to win the next point wins the game. The receiving team has the option to choose who returns the serve if the score reaches deuce.
Spin a racquet to see which team gets to choose whether to serve, receive or pick a side. Warm up and practice serves before the first match. No first ball in. Warm up should not exceed 10 minutes.
If players from the same team have a difference of opinion on a line call, the ball is automatically called in and the opponent receives the point. Make calls on your side only. Do not make calls from across the court.
In each bracket the player who finished first will partner with the player who finished fourth against the second and third places. Similarly, the player who finished fifth will partner with the player who finished eighth against six and seven.
Return score sheets to the tournament director. If there is a tie for placement, the criteria below is used to break the tie.
Tie Breaking Procedure
The following method of breaking ties was voted and approved by the board. If step one doesn’t break the tie, we will move to step two and so on.
- Total matches won
- Total games won in matches won
- Recalculate total games by eliminating games 4, 3, 5, 6, 2, 7 one at a time in that order if needed.
Saturday Final Games
All players will play in the finals. The top four in each bracket will play for the gold and the silver medals. The next four will play for the bronze. Each match will consist of two regular sets (first team to 6 games winning by two). If the score gets to 6-6, a 7 point Coman tiebreaker will be played having to win by two. If the match is tied at one set apiece, a 10 point Coman super-tiebreaker will be played to determine who wins the match. As always, you must win the tiebreaker by 2 points.
- Foot faulting is against the rules and should be avoided
- Do not make calls for your opponents
- Do not catch balls in the air that appear to be out.
- If you are not 100% sure a ball is out, call it in. Pretty sure it is out is not good enough
Definitions
Coman tiebreaker: The purpose of the Coman tiebreaker is to keep each person serving on the same side that he/she served on for the set being played. The first team to 7 points winning by 2 wins the set. The first team serves once from the deuce court. Teams change sides and the next team serves twice starting from the ad court. After total points 1, 5, 9, 13 etc. teams change ends.
